Which Red Seal Trades Are Compulsory? BC, Ontario and Alberta Compared

Before you book a Red Seal exam it is worth knowing whether the certificate is something you need or something you want. In some provinces certain trades are compulsory: you cannot legally do the work without being a registered apprentice or a certified journeyperson. In others the same trade is voluntary, and certification is a credential rather than a licence.

It genuinely differs by province. Plumber is compulsory in Ontario and Alberta but not in British Columbia. Powerline Technician is the reverse — compulsory in British Columbia only. The table below maps all twenty trades we cover against the three provinces’ official lists.

At a glance

  • British Columbia: 7 of these 20 trades require certification
  • Ontario: 10 of 20
  • Alberta: 11 of 20
  • Carpenter, Cook, Parts Technician, Millwright, Painter and Instrumentation are voluntary in all three — the Red Seal is a credential, not a licence

What “compulsory” actually requires

British Columbia — Skilled Trades Certification (compulsory trades). Under SkilledTradesBC, workers must be a registered apprentice, a registered trade qualifier, or a certified journeyperson. Mobile Crane Operator and Tower Crane Operator take effect 2026-07-05.
SkilledTradesBC — Skilled Trades Certification

Ontario — Compulsory Trades (23 trades). Under Skilled Trades Ontario, workers must hold a valid Certificate of Qualification, a Provisional Certificate of Qualification, or a Registered Training Agreement; journeypersons must renew their C of Q each year.

Alberta — Compulsory Certification Trades. Under Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training (Tradesecrets), to perform restricted activities a worker must be a registered apprentice under supervision, a certified journeyperson, or hold a recognized trade certificate.

Does the exam itself change by province?

No. The Red Seal exam is interprovincial: the same paper, the same Major Work Activity weighting, wherever you sit it. What your province controls is whether you are required to hold the certificate, how you apply, and where you write.

The time allowed and pass mark are also provincial rather than part of the Red Seal standard. Ontario’s exam guide states four hours and a 70% pass mark, and SkilledTradesBC lists four hours for an Interprovincial Red Seal exam (three hours for a provincial Certificate of Qualification). Confirm the current figures with your own authority before exam day.

Preparing for the exam

Whichever province you are in, the paper is the same. Our trade practice exams are built to the official Red Seal Major Work Activity weighting for each trade, with a worked explanation on every question. Pick your trade from the table above to start.

Provincial lists were read directly from each authority on 2026-09-10. Requirements change — check the linked official page before making a decision.
