How to Prepare for the Red Seal Exam: 8-Week Study Plan

The most reliable way to prepare for a Red Seal exam is to study what the exam actually weights, not just what you already know, and to practise under time pressure. This guide gives you the official facts, a week-by-week plan you can start today, and the real question counts for all 20 trades we cover.

What you are preparing for

Step 1: know your trade’s exam

The 8-week plan

Week 1: get a baseline and the official documents

Download your trade’s exam breakdown and Red Seal Occupational Standard from red-seal.ca and take the official sample questions. Then take a short timed quiz — our practice page for your trade has free questions with a full explanation on every answer. Write down every block where you missed more than you expected. That list is your study plan.

Weeks 2–5: study by weight, not by comfort

Give each block study time in proportion to its share of the exam. Avoid the trap of spending most of your time on the blocks you already like. With 60 study hours and the Parts Technician exam (120 questions) the split looks like this:

BlockQuestionsStudy hours (of 60)
Performs common occupational skills199.5 h
Performs customer service2613.0 h
Performs parts acquisition2914.5 h
Performs warehousing and inventory3015.0 h
Applies business practices168.0 h

Hours = 60 × (questions in the block ÷ 120). Then adjust: add time to the blocks from your Week 1 list, and take it from the blocks you already scored well on. Each week, finish with a short quiz on that week’s blocks and read the explanation for every question you missed — the explanation, not the answer letter, is what you are studying.

Week 6: timed practice

The real exam is long. Practise answering in blocks of 30–40 questions against a clock, so you learn your pace and how to skip and return. If your trade involves calculations, do a full set of them by hand with a calculator, without notes. Confirm with your province which calculators are allowed.

Week 7: repair the weak blocks

Return to the lowest-scoring blocks from Weeks 2–6. For each wrong question, ask what you misread or which rule you did not know, and fix that one thing. Do the calculation drills again until each formula is automatic.

Week 8: exam week

Five mistakes to avoid

  1. Studying by comfort. Weight your hours by the blueprint, then by your own weak spots.
  2. Memorising answers. A rule you understand carries over to a differently worded question; a memorised answer letter does not.
  3. Skipping the maths. Formulas that are learned but never practised are easy to get wrong under time pressure.
  4. Never practising under a clock. Finishing on time is a skill you can train.
  5. Using out-of-date rules. Codes and regulations change; use your trade’s current codes and your province’s current rules.
