Red Seal Plumber Exam: Official 2026 Weighting Guide (125 Questions)

The Red Seal Plumber Interprovincial Examination contains 125 multiple-choice questions, distributed across seven Major Work Activities (MWAs). Knowing how those questions are split is the difference between studying evenly and studying where the marks actually are.

2. What the weighting tells you to study first

Two activities carry 45% of the paper between them: MWA C (sewers, sewage treatment and DWV, 26%) and MWA D (water service and distribution, 19%). Roughly one question in two comes from drainage and water distribution work.

At the other end, MWA G (specialized systems) is nine questions. It still matters, but it is not where a limited study week should start.

A practical order for most candidates: C → D → E → F → A → B → G, weighted by how confident you already are in each.

3. Three questions at exam standard

MWA C — Installs, tests and services sewers, sewage treatment systems and drainage, waste and vent (DWV) systems

A 3-inch (DN 75) building drain is installed with the minimum required slope of 1:50 over a horizontal run of 28 meters. What is the total vertical drop, in millimeters, over this length?

  • A) 560 mm
  • B) 280 mm
  • C) 1400 mm
  • D) 700 mm

Answer: A

The minimum slope for a 3-inch (DN 75) building drain according to the National Plumbing Code of Canada (NPC) is 1:50. This means for every 50 units of horizontal run, there is 1 unit of vertical drop. Given a horizontal run of 28 meters (28,000 mm): Drop = Horizontal Run / Slope Ratio Drop = 28,000 mm / 50 = 560 mm.

MWA D — Installs, tests and services water service and distribution

When performing a hydrostatic pressure test on a newly installed water distribution system using a hand pump, a plumber observes a gradual drop in pressure over 30 minutes, despite no visible leaks. What is the most critical maintenance item to check on the test pump and gauge assembly before re-testing?

  • A) The test hose connection to the system for tightness, as it might be a slow leak.
  • B) The calibration certificate of the pressure gauge to ensure accuracy.
  • C) The internal check valve or seals of the hand pump itself for wear or debris.
  • D) The fluid type in the system, ensuring it is water and not air-entrained.

Answer: C

A gradual drop in pressure without visible leaks in the system often indicates an issue with the testing equipment itself. The internal check valve of a hand pump is designed to hold pressure; if it's worn, dirty, or has compromised seals, it will allow pressure to bleed back through the pump, falsely indicating a system leak. While checking the hose connections (A) is good practice, and gauge calibration (B) is important for accuracy, the pump's ability to hold pressure is fundamental. The fluid type (D) is less likely to cause a gradual pressure drop in this manner if the system was properly filled and purged.

MWA F — Installs, tests and services low-pressure steam and hydronic systems

A plumber is installing a grooved coupling system for a chilled water HVAC loop containing a 30% propylene glycol solution. Which gasket material would be the most appropriate choice for this application?

  • A) EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer)
  • B) Nitrile (Buna-N)
  • C) Silicone
  • D) Natural Rubber

Answer: A

EPDM gaskets are highly resistant to water, steam, hot water, alcohols, and many glycols, making them the standard and most appropriate choice for chilled water, hot water, and HVAC systems where glycol solutions are commonly used. Nitrile (Buna-N) (B) is generally suitable for petroleum-based oils and gasoline but not ideal for glycols. Silicone (C) has a wide temperature range but is more expensive and typically not the primary choice for glycol-based systems over EPDM. Natural Rubber (D) has poor resistance to heat and many chemicals, including glycols.
