Sample Question 1 of 3
A sheet metal worker in Calgary is hanging supply duct 3.5 m above a concrete floor along an open mezzanine edge. There are no guardrails, an aerial lift cannot reach the area, and a travel restraint line would stop the worker short of the edge where the duct must be joined. Which fall protection method does the worker need?
A) A travel restraint system set so that the worker stops just short of the edge
B) A fall arrest system: full-body harness, energy-absorbing lanyard and anchor
C) A safety monitor watching the worker, with warning lines set along the edge
D) A safety net hung below the work area, so no harness is needed on the worker
Correct answer: B

Fall protection is required at about 3 m in most provinces. Guardrails come first, then travel restraint; where the worker must reach the open edge and restraint cannot be used, a personal fall arrest system with a full-body harness, energy-absorbing lanyard and suitable anchor is required. A monitor and warning lines do not protect a worker at this height. A safety net needs its own engineered design and supports, which is far more than this duct joint calls for, and it does not fit a worker reaching the edge from this mezzanine.

Sample Question 2 of 3
An apprentice in a Hamilton shop has cut out the pattern for a light-gauge square-to-round and wants to start bending it. The last one came out with kinks where the corners meet the round, because the bends were made in the wrong places. In what order should the fitting be formed?
A) Form the seam edges while flat; bend lightly along corner lines; keep the flat triangles flat; then close the seam, true the round
B) Close the seam, true the round; bend lightly along corner lines; keep the flat triangles flat; then form the seam edges while flat
C) Bend lightly along corner lines; close the seam, true the round; form the seam edges while flat; then keep the flat triangles flat
D) Form the seam edges while flat; close the seam, true the round; bend lightly along corner lines; then keep the flat triangles flat
Correct answer: A

The seam edges are formed while the pattern is still flat. The corner sections are then curved by light bends along the element lines that fan out from each corner, while the flat triangles stay flat, and the seam is closed and the round end trued last. The other options use the same steps in the wrong order: B does 'close the seam, true the round' before 'bend lightly along corner lines', C does 'close the seam, true the round' before 'form the seam edges while flat', and D does 'close the seam, true the round' before 'bend lightly along corner lines'.

Sample Question 3 of 3
A crew in a Brandon clinic is installing a return grille on a duct with a smoke detector just behind it, in the ceiling space. The controls technician must be able to reach and test the detector, and the crew has hung the grille tight against the duct. The ceiling is drywall. How should access be provided?
A) Fit the grille as it is hung, and let the technician cut into the drywall when the detector needs a test
B) Fit the grille as it is hung, and tell the technician that the detector can be tested from the roof
C) Fit a hinged grille or an access door sized for the detector, and confirm it can be reached from below
D) Fit a screwed-on grille over a very small access hole, and let the technician reach through by feel
Correct answer: C

Access is provided so that the device can be seen and reached, here with a hinged grille or a door, and it is checked from below. Cutting drywall for each test is damage, not access. A test from the roof does not reach the detector, and reaching in by feel is not a proper test.
