Quick 3-Question Steamfitter / Pipefitter (307A) Readiness Check

Click any option (A–D) below to grade yourself immediately and view the worked explanation:

Sample Question 1 of 3
A steamfitter crew at a pulp mill in Prince George must enter a black liquor storage tank to replace a corroded internal steam coil. The entry permit requires an atmospheric test with a four-gas meter before anyone goes in, and the apprentice holding the meter asks the journeyperson how the readings are taken and judged. In what order is the test done?
A) Zero the meter in fresh air outside; read the oxygen level; read the flammable gas (LEL); then read the toxic gases (H2S, CO)
B) Zero the meter in fresh air outside; read the flammable gas (LEL); read the oxygen level; then read the toxic gases (H2S, CO)
C) Zero the meter in fresh air outside; read the toxic gases (H2S, CO); read the oxygen level; then read the flammable gas (LEL)
D) Read the oxygen level; read the flammable gas (LEL); read the toxic gases (H2S, CO); then zero the meter in fresh air outside
Correct answer: A

The meter is zeroed in clean air, not inside the tank. Oxygen is read first because many flammable-gas sensors need enough oxygen to read correctly; flammable gas and then toxic gases follow, each judged against the permit limits. The other options use the same steps in the wrong order: B does 'read the flammable gas (LEL)' before 'read the oxygen level', C does 'read the toxic gases (H2S, CO)' before 'read the oxygen level', and D does 'read the toxic gases (H2S, CO)' before 'zero the meter in fresh air outside'.

Sample Question 2 of 3
A safety audit at a shop in Saskatoon finds no written schedule for inspecting rigging gear, and some tag lines and slings have been tied with knots that nobody has checked. One rope has a hitch that has been left in it for weeks. What should the crew do?
A) Leave the written schedule off, since it is enough to give the gear a look when it is taken out
B) Write up the regular inspection schedule, check each knot and hitch, and retie or replace them
C) Leave the knots in the rope, since a knot that has held for weeks has already proved that it holds
D) Pull the knots tighter with a small come-along, so that they can be left as they are on the rope
Correct answer: B

Regular inspection requirements are documented, and knots and hitches are inspected and retied. An old knot may have weakened the rope, and more tension does not repair it.

Sample Question 3 of 3
A journeyperson steamfitter at a refinery in Montreal is preparing a newly installed process piping system for its hydrostatic test. The line has relief valves set well below the test pressure, long spans sized only for gas, and several high points. In what order should the system be prepared and tested?
A) Raise pressure on calibrated gauges; remove or blank the relief valves; fit temporary supports for the water; then fill it with the vents open
B) Remove or blank the relief valves; fill it with the vents open; fit temporary supports for the water; then raise pressure on calibrated gauges
C) Remove or blank the relief valves; fit temporary supports for the water; fill it with the vents open; then raise pressure on calibrated gauges
D) Remove or blank the relief valves; fit temporary supports for the water; raise pressure on calibrated gauges; then fill it with the vents open
Correct answer: C

Relief valves set below the test pressure are removed, blanked or gagged, and a temporary test relief is used. Temporary supports carry the water weight, vents clear the air while filling, and the pressure is raised on calibrated gauges. The other options use the same steps in the wrong order: A does 'raise pressure on calibrated gauges' before 'remove or blank the relief valves', B does 'fill it with the vents open' before 'fit temporary supports for the water', and D does 'raise pressure on calibrated gauges' before 'fill it with the vents open'.
