Sample Question 1 of 3
Late on a Friday at a fleet shop in Red Deer, a mechanic finds that a coolant hose on a parked tractor has split and about 20 litres of glycol coolant have spread across the bay floor, running toward the trench drain. Glycol is toxic to pets and wildlife and must not reach the storm or sanitary sewer. In what order should the mechanic deal with the spill?
A) Stop the leak at the source; read the SDS and put on the listed PPE; berm the drain and the edge of the spill; then absorb it and bag it as hazardous waste
B) Absorb it and bag it as hazardous waste; read the SDS and put on the listed PPE; berm the drain and the edge of the spill; then stop the leak at the source
C) Read the SDS and put on the listed PPE; absorb it and bag it as hazardous waste; stop the leak at the source; then berm the drain and the edge of the spill
D) Berm the drain and the edge of the spill; absorb it and bag it as hazardous waste; read the SDS and put on the listed PPE; then stop the leak at the source
Correct answer: A

The source is stopped first so the spill stops growing, then the SDS gives the PPE and cleanup method. The drain is protected before the absorbent goes down, and the used absorbent is bagged as hazardous waste. The other options use the same steps in the wrong order: B does 'absorb it and bag it as hazardous waste' before 'read the SDS and put on the listed PPE', C does 'absorb it and bag it as hazardous waste' before 'stop the leak at the source', and D does 'absorb it and bag it as hazardous waste' before 'read the SDS and put on the listed PPE'.

Sample Question 2 of 3
A tractor with air disc brakes at a dealership in Sudbury squeals on light stops after a pad change at another shop. The pads are the correct part and the rotors are in good shape, but the mechanic finds the pad retaining spring clips that hold the pads against the caliper were left out. What should be done?
A) Spray brake cleaner on the pads after every trip until the noise stops
B) Fit the maker's pad retainer and springs so the pads cannot rattle
C) Machine the rotors, as a squeal means the rotor is glazed
D) Leave it as it is, since pad squeal is normal on every air disc brake
Correct answer: B

The retainer and springs hold the pads firmly in the caliper. Without them the pads vibrate and squeal and can wear unevenly. The parts from the maker's kit are fitted. Cleaner, machining or leaving it does not stop pads that have nothing holding them.

Sample Question 3 of 3
A mechanic at a fleet shop in Sudbury must drill holes in a tractor's frame rail to mount a tool box bracket. The truck maker's body builder book gives rules for holes in the frame. The apprentice suggests drilling through the bottom flange, since it is easier to reach. Where may holes be drilled?
A) Anywhere on the rail, as long as the holes are deburred and painted
B) In the bottom flange, as long as the holes are deburred and painted
C) In the web, in the maker's pattern and spacing, not the flanges
D) In the top flange, as long as the holes are deburred and painted
Correct answer: C

The flanges carry the highest bending stress, so a hole there can start a fatigue crack. Holes go in the web, within the maker's limits for size, spacing and distance from the flanges. Deburring and paint do not make a hole in a flange acceptable.
