Certification is voluntary in Ontario

Sample Question 1 of 3
At a pulp mill in Prince George, B.C., a millwright must torch-cut seized bolts off a conveyor drive bracket. The hot work permit calls for a fire watch, and a labourer is assigned to stand with the millwright during the cutting. Halfway through, the labourer offers to hand up tools and move the cutting cart as well. What is the main duty of the fire watch?
A) Watch for sparks and smouldering material, put out small fires and raise the alarm
B) Run the cutting cart and pass tools up whenever the millwright needs a hand
C) Sign off the hot work permit and decide when the cutting job is finished
D) Keep other trades out of the area and log the times cutting starts and stops
Correct answer: A

A fire watch does no other work during hot work. They watch for sparks, slag and smouldering material on both sides of the work, put out small fires with the equipment at hand, and raise the alarm if a fire grows.

Sample Question 2 of 3
A millwright at a fan plant in Winnipeg is installing new V-belt sheaves on a motor and fan. The two sheaves have the same face width, and the belts wore out quickly on the last set because the sheaves were not in line. No laser alignment tool is available today. How should the sheave alignment be checked?
A) Sight along the belts from the motor end and adjust until they look straight by eye
B) Lay a straightedge across both sheave faces and adjust until it touches at four points
C) Measure the distance between the shafts at each end and make the two distances equal
D) Run the drive and adjust the motor until the belts stop squealing at full load
Correct answer: B

For sheaves of equal width, a straightedge or tight string across both faces touches at four points when the sheaves are parallel and in line. Equal shaft spacing alone does not prove the sheaves are in line, and noise is a poor guide.

Sample Question 3 of 3
A millwright at a semiconductor supplier in Bromont, Quebec, is planning a new pipe run from a 100 L/s vacuum pump to a process chamber that works at 50 mTorr. The first layout shows 10 m of 2 in. pipe with several elbows. To keep the pumping speed at the chamber close to the pump's rating, what must the piping layout prioritize?
A) Lots of flexible hose, since it is easier to route around equipment
B) A long run of pipe, so there is more surface area to hold the vacuum
C) Short runs with as few bends as possible and the largest practical bore
D) High-vacuum grease on every joint, so the gas flows past more easily
Correct answer: C

At low pressure the pipe's conductance limits the speed at the chamber. Conductance rises steeply with diameter and falls with length and bends, so runs are kept short and straight with the largest practical bore.
