Red Seal Plumber Exam Guide 2026: Blueprint, Rules, Prep
This is the plain-language guide to the Red Seal Plumber exam: what is on it, how the official blueprint splits the questions, whether you need the certificate where you work, and how to prepare. The exam facts come from the official Red Seal exam breakdown and from Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta’s own authorities; the calculations are ones you can redo on paper.
Plumber exam quick facts
- Questions: 125 multiple-choice questions on the Interprovincial Red Seal exam (official Red Seal exam breakdown, red-seal.ca).
- Time and pass mark are set by the province. Skilled Trades Ontario’s exam preparation guide says: “You will have up to four hours to write your examination. You need a mark of 70% to pass.” SkilledTradesBC lists 4 hours for the interprovincial Red Seal exam. Confirm your own province’s rules before exam day.
- Ontario trade code: Skilled Trades Ontario lists the trade as Plumber (306A), a Red Seal trade.
Do you need to be certified as a plumber?
It depends on the province. Based on each authority’s published compulsory-trade list (checked in September 2026):
- Ontario: compulsory — listed as “Plumber (306A)”. Skilled Trades Ontario says a person must hold a Registered Training Agreement, a Provisional Certificate of Qualification or a Certificate of Qualification to practise the trade legally.
- Alberta: compulsory — listed as “Plumber”.
- British Columbia: not on SkilledTradesBC’s compulsory list, so certification is voluntary, although the Red Seal is still the recognised national credential.

Two blocks stand out. Sewers and drainage, waste and vent (DWV) systems is 32 questions (26%), and water service and distribution is 24 (19%). Together they are 56 of 125 questions — 44.8% of the exam — so they deserve the largest share of your study time. Fixtures and appliances (17), low-pressure steam and hydronic systems (16), common skills (14) and tube, tubing and pipe (13) come next; specialized systems is the smallest block at 9.
The maths behind plumber exam questions
Numbers are examples. Minimum slopes, sizes and fixture values come from the plumbing code in force in your province (based on the National Plumbing Code of Canada), never from memory.
A 45° offset must move a drain 600 mm sideways. What is the centre-to-centre travel length of the pipe between the two 45° fittings?
The offset, the run and the travel form a right isosceles triangle, so travel = offset × √2 = 600 × 1.414 = 848.5 mm.
Answer: ≈ 848.5 mm. Subtract the fitting take-off when you cut the pipe.
A horizontal drain runs 12 m. If it must fall at 2% (about 20 mm per metre), how much lower is the downstream end?
Fall = length × slope = 12 × 0.02 = 0.24 m (240 mm).
Answer: 0.24 m (240 mm). The 2% is an example; the code sets the minimum slope for each pipe size.
A pressure gauge sits 15 m below the water level in a tank. What static pressure does it read, in kPa? (Water: 1,000 kg/m³; g = 9.81 m/s².)
Pressure = density × g × height = 1,000 × 9.81 × 15 = 147,150 Pa = 147.2 kPa.
Answer: ≈ 147.2 kPa. A useful rule: every 10 m of water is roughly 98 kPa.
How much energy does it take to heat 200 L of water by 45 K, and how long does a 10 kW element take (no losses)?
Mass ≈ 200 kg. Energy = m × c × ΔT = 200 × 4.186 × 45 = 37,674 kJ. Time = 37,674 ÷ 10 kW = 3,767 s = 62.8 min.
Answer: ≈ 37.7 MJ; about 63 minutes. Real heaters lose heat, so real times are longer.
How much water fills 30 m of pipe with a 25 mm inside diameter (for a pressure test)?
Volume = π ÷ 4 × d² × length = π ÷ 4 × 0.025² × 30 = 0.01473 m³ = 14.7 L.
Answer: ≈ 14.7 L. Convert millimetres to metres before you square.
How to prepare
- Start with a baseline. Take the free questions on our Plumber practice test page (every answer is explained) and the official sample questions on red-seal.ca. Note the blocks where you miss the most.
- Weight your time by the blueprint. Put roughly 45% of your hours into DWV and water service, then adjust for your weak blocks. Our 8-week Red Seal study plan shows how to convert blueprint weights into study hours.
- Drill the maths by hand until the five calculations above are automatic.
- Practise under a clock. Try the Plumber mock exam so you learn your pace before exam day.
- Read the code, not just notes. The plumbing code edition in force in your province is the source for slopes, sizes and clearances.
